BAKER'S DELIGHT
Bakers Delight

Bakers Delight actively supports environmentally conscious practices.  Excess product not donated to charities is often used as animal feed in an effort to reduce landfill.  A greasy waste management strategy is in place to prevent pollution of our waterways.

Bakers Delight’s new ‘Green’ artisan oven is currently being rolled out, with a characteristic of a 25 per cent reduction in energy resources. Insulation properties result in heat being retained; ultimately requiring less power.  Bakers Delight also supports the 'Save Water Target 155' Victorian Government iniative in an effort to reduce urban water use.

They promote the use of environmentally friendly calico bags and encourages paper bags where possible or the reusing of plastic bags, in an effort to reduce landfill. The calico bags are made from cotton, a natural bio-degradable fibre. Bakers Delight donates 10 cents towards Clean Up Australia for every bag sold. Bakers Delight also works with packaging suppliers in reducing the use of plastic bags and amount of ingredient packaging.

Bakers Delight has been signatory to the National Packaging Covenant (NPC) since its inception in 2004. The NPC is an industry-led initiative to self-manage packaging waste with the goal of the covenant to achieve a national 65 per cent recycling rate by 2010.

THE COTTON ON GROUP

Mannya (translated in English means Pot Holes) is located in the South of Uganda, almost on the Tanzanian border. Dubbed 'mission impossible' by the local diocese an Australian ventured there about ten years ago. He reported back to St Bernard's parish in Geelong, who were looking for a community to sponsor in Africa. Mannya became Fr Peter Foley's personal mission along with the parish of St Bernard's, Geelong.

When they first got involved only a small village was present with a local primary school, ten years on they now have a fully functional medical centre, parish church, secondary school, dormitories and sponsored children. Thanks to the hard work of a small few, particularly St Bernard's Geelong, St Bernard's Essendon and Fr Foley who has been back to Mannya eight times since his first visit.

The Cotton On Foundation joined forces with this amazing group in 2007 and are looking to give them the added financial and resource boost that they require to help empower the local people of Mannya village to live a life full of hope and promise.  The East African Mannya Village is situated a rough four hour drive from the Ugandan capital Kampala, with a population that has been devastated by the AIDS epidemic the community is in desperate need of infrastructure, AIDS awareness, medical assistance and sustainability.

Although the village is over 12,000 kilometres away from our doorstep, the Cotton On Foundation is focused on assisting through constructing new schools, assisting with agriculture and supplying much needed equipment to support sustainable infrastructure.  Ongoing support from the Cotton On Foundation will continue for as long as needed and is essential to the long term survival of the Mannya community.

Cotton On’s fundraisers, Message In A Bottle and bags, raise money for people in need around the world.

Who would have thought that putting a message in a bottle and sending it out into the deep blue, would actually end up in someone’s hands? You would think after days, weeks, even months of bobbling around the sea, it would be either gobbled up, get stuck in a swirl, thrown into a pirates loot, or God forbid, hit an iceberg!  Message In A Bottle and bags are located in over 350 Cotton On stores in Australia and New Zealand. We’ll also be selling through Singapore and Hong Kong in the near future.  All proceeds from every Message in a Bottle water and bag sold will be put into the Cotton On Foundation supporting charities around the world.

COUNTRY ROAD
 Country Road Logo

Country Road understands the social and ethical considerations involved in sourcing quality materials around the world.

They insist each of their suppliers signs Country Road's Code of Labour Practice.  The code details the ethical and responsible manufacturing practices they expect from our suppliers, in accordance with International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions.  To ensure their code is respected, we use independent agencies to audit suppliers on our behalf and we make regular supplier visits ourselves. Corrective actions or sanctions offer potential ways forward should further issues arise.

Country Road have also signed the National Packaging Covenant - a voluntary government and industry initiative that works towards reducing the environmental impact of packaging.  Their Packaging Action Plan for 2008-2010 aims to make a difference across three key areas:

* take-home bags are 100% recyclable
* to encourage suppliers to alter packaging materials for our accessory lines
* to influence their suppliers to package in a more environmentally friendly manner.

Country Road are also making plans to more effectively manage our carbon emissions.  After engaging Climate Change Solutions consultants CarbonetiX to assess our carbon footprint, they now understand their carbon outputs better and are developing strategies to manage their footprint more efficiently.

Darrell Lea takes its role as a good corporate citizen very seriously. The Kogarah factory is located adjacent to a residential area and hence Darrell Lea employs the best technology in pollution control and has a system in place to respond promptly to the concerns of residents if and when they arise.

In 2008, this partnership entered a new dimension. “The Esprit partnership is characterised by a particularly serious and great commitment of the partner who wants to really make a difference with joint projects”, explains Thomas Marschall, SOS Children’s Villages worldwide. Here, 14 family homes will become the new home for more than 140 children. The concept also includes a kindergarten, which will have enough space for a total of 60 children from the village and neighbouring communities. There will also be a social centre. This will become the home of the family strengthening programme, which will in future be a point-of-call for more than 500 women and their children.  The project focuses on education and support, which mainly aims to help girls and women to lead their life as strong characters. The construction phase is set to kick off in October 2008, at the end of the monsoon rains. The official opening of the village is planned for January 2010.  Since 2008, Esprit has been involved in six different projects, which focus on the strengthening of families, in the New Delhi area.

Gloria Jean's entire line of flavored coffees, both regular and decaf contains Rainforest Alliance Certified beans. That means that when you drink Gloria Jean's flavored coffees you are directly improving the lives of farm workers and tropical wildlife.  Gloria Jean's partnership with the Rainforest Alliance supports their shared goal of conserving ecosystems where coffees are grown and treating farm workers and their families with respect by providing a fair wage, and access to education and medical care.

The Rainforest Alliance, an international non-for-profit, collaborates with leading conservation organizations around the world to help farmers, foresters and lodge owners to establish sustainable land use practices that reflect environmental, social and economic concerns. Throughout Latin America, Africa and Asia coffee beans are grown and harvested by some 25 million farmers, most of them smallholders.

The Rainforest Alliance works with farmers to conserve natural resources and to protect forests, rivers and other wildlife habitats. Those farms that meet the Rainforest Alliance's demanding social and environmental standards are awarded a certification seal. The seal is an incentive to farmers and a guarantee to consumers that Gloria Jean's purchases coffee grown on farms where forests, rivers, soils and wildlife are protected and workers are treated respectfully, paid decent wages, equipped and trained properly and have access to education and health care.  Gloria Jean's believes that the program created by the Rainforest Alliance serves the greatest good for the most people; both on an individual and community-wide level and that the organization supports a wide geographical area, especially when compared to other certification programs.
