What is Earth Hour?
Earth Hour is run by the conservation organisation World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Earth Hour is a global climate change initiative which calls on individuals and businesses around the world to turn off their lights for one hour. The goal of the campaign is to express that individual action on a mass scale can help change our planet for the better.
What is different about Earth Hour in 2010?
Earth Hour is evolving from one hour, on one day throughout the year to a message of Earth Hour, Every Hour!
Earth hour aims to encourage the community to commit to behavioural changes in their daily lives and reduce their environmental footprint.
This year, Earth Hour focuses on promoting long-term sustainability. This is summed up by the idea that you can "make a resolution" for Planet Earth. Earth Hour is a positive message of hope and action, emphasising what people can do when they can act together.
How is Bayside flying the sustainability flag?
Here are just a few of the things we do daily at Bayside Shopping Centre to help reduce our carbon footprint:
- Over 50% of our paper is recycled
- Recycle used printer cartridges
- Currently use low power lighting to save energy
- Where possible use recycled water during cleaning services
- Encourage and practice waste separation with cardboard and general waste
- Enable glass recycling facilities at Bayside Entertainment
What are the benefits of becoming green?
There are many benefits of going green at work and at home. By reducing the electricity you use you are reducing air and water pollution from power stations and saving a tonne of greenhouse gas for each 1,000 kilowatt-hour of electricity we save.
Refilling, reusing and recycling the materials you use reduces the amount of waste and pollution we generate.
Green initiatives can provide enormous savings in electricity use, saving up to $180 per 1,000 kilowatt-hours of energy. Why not consult your energy company about green power options or install renewable energy sources like solar power. You may even be able to receive a government grant to help cover the installation cost!
